Opening hours, prices and bank holidays: keeping your site right
Out-of-date details cost more trust than no website at all. Here is how to keep them right.
A customer who drives over during the hours on your website and finds the door locked rarely comes back. Out-of-date details are the most common problem on small business websites, and the easiest to fix.
Know what goes out of date
Make a short list of everything on your site that changes: opening hours, prices, menus, staff, services, offers, events. Those are the things to check, not the whole site.
Plan for the bank holidays
Ireland has ten public holidays a year: New Year's Day, St Brigid's Day, St Patrick's Day, Easter Monday, the first Mondays of May, June and August, the last Monday of October, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day. If your hours change on any of them, put the change on your site ahead of time, and on your Google Business Profile too.
Change it the day it changes
The best time to update a price is the moment it changes, by the person who changed it. If that means emailing a developer and waiting, it will not happen. Your website should let the people who run the business change the details themselves.
Schedule what you know is coming
The Christmas menu, the summer hours, the sale that starts on Friday: if you know the date, set the change to go live on it. Then nobody has to remember at 8 in the morning.
Check it every month
Once a month, open your site on a phone and read the pages people visit most. It takes ten minutes and catches what slipped through.
